Brothers and Sisters,

I wanted to reach out to the members of SMART Local 16 during this time of unprecedented uncertainty, in order to give you the most pertinent information I could regarding the state of your union.

Local 16 has closed its offices and has engaged a plan for limited access to the office by the office staff. This is solely for conducting business that is essential to the operation of the Union. This includes printing of dues receipts, printing of checks, and allows access to Local 16’s mail.

I will regularly be in the office working for the members of Local 16. I have directed our Business Representatives and Organizers to work remotely. They have full access to Union Fusion, our server, and all files, so they are fully capable of serving the membership regarding any need a member may have. Our Organizers are currently contacting all of you via phone in order to check in with each of you, along with working on matters of organizing that range from surveillance and monitoring of non-union jobsites, maintaining progress on legislative projects that are in our interest, and tidying up curriculum for our Youth to Youth programs.

As we care for all our members, we also have a responsibility towards our office staff. In the interests of doing our part with “social distancing,” we have transitioned our office staff onto a schedule that allows no congregating of individuals in our office. The staff will work from home for much of their week, and each staffer has been scheduled for time in the office where they will perform the portions of their jobs that cannot be done remotely.

I do not know how long this new reality will be with us. I know that many of us are feeling uncertainty and anxiety. One thing I can control however, is that I intend to keep serving the interest of the membership of SMART Local 16 at every turn. I will keep this in mind with every adaption we take regarding this current state of affairs.

These are difficult times. This Local Union is her to serve its membership, and all its Representatives are committed to helping the members through these difficult times. In the coming days, I will be communicating with you through Union Fusion regarding resources and information available to the membership regarding COVID-19, Unemployment Insurance, EAP Programs, or any other matter important to your wellbeing.

Please do not hesitate to contact Me, or any on the staff of SMART Local 16 in order to assist you.

In Solidarity, I remain fraternally yours,
