SMART announced a nationwide partnership with TOOTRiS, an on-demand childcare services provider, to offer childcare benefits to its U.S. membership.

This initiative makes SMART the first building trades union in the country to provide wrap-around childcare benefits for members.

Key Points:

• The benefit becomes active on February 1, 2025, for participating sheet metal locals.
• Eligible members must be in good standing and have children aged 0–12.
• Local unions must opt in for their members to access the benefit.

This program does not subsidize childcare costs directly; rather, it grants premium access to various childcare options through TOOTRiS’s platform.

SMART’s leadership frames this as a response to one of the biggest barriers for workers in the trades: unpredictable work schedules, mobile job sites, and the high cost or limited availability of childcare.

Through TOOTRiS, members will be able to browse, compare, and enroll in licensed childcare programs nationwide, including those offering non-traditional hours, drop-in care, and 24/7 availability.
